Do you own a house with a traditional overhead garage door?
If so, chances are you’ll have to go through garage door cable repair at some point.
Depending on the amount of moisture that’s accumulating near the bottom of your door, you might have to change them every couple of years if you don’t take any preventive actions.
There are different garage door systems on the market, and some of them utilize cables in different ways. Today we’ll talk about a setup with torsion springs in the middle of the door with two torsion cables running on the sides.
Overhead Garage door cables are connected to the bottom of the garage door and cable drums at either end of the spring shaft.
Whenever the torsion spring turns the drums, the cables wrap or unwrap around the drum, the garage door opens up or down.
The torsion spring winds up when the doors are going down and unwind when lowered– helping balance the garage door’s weight.
Numerous things can happen with a garage door, and several of them are quite easy to fix.
But problems involving the torsion garage door cables are more severe and will need a skilled service tech.
Often, the areas where the cable connects to the hinge gets rusty. From there, it’s just a matter of time until the hinge breaks or the cable snaps.
You should avoid this situation at all costs for a couple of reasons. First, if your one cable snaps, the whole door can get off tracks. It can cause extensive damage to your vehicles or, even worse, you or your family members. In addition to that, repairing such damage isn’t cheap and may require installing a brand new door.
It’s not going to be a simple garage door cable repair anymore. Dissembling a damaged overhead door and installing a new one can cost over 1000$ depending on the door’s type and manufacturer. Taking preventive actions, however, can eliminate this problem.
Even if the cable just snapped and your door is intact, it is still a pretty lengthy process to get your garage door cable repair done. See, you need to unwind the springs first. It will ensure a safe working environment for a technician and allow for installing new cables. If your garage door springs are worn out as well, it might be a good idea to replace those as well.
Inspect your cables and bottom hinges at least every quarter. If you see any signs of moisture or rust build-up, you should take care of that ASAP. Usually, we do not recommend using WD-40 for your garage door, but in this case, you can apply it to your bottom hinges and cable connections. You can also visit your local hardware store and ask for a good anti-corrosive substance you can use.
In conclusion, it’s much easier to perform quarterly maintenance of your cables than wait until they snap and you need garage door cable repair services. Those will be much more costly.
