LiftMaster garage door openers always come with a remote that allows you to operate the door from your vehicle. They also always come with a preset code on the motor so that the door operates the first time you use the LiftMaster remote.
It is advisable that you reset and reprogram the LiftMaster remote after the first use. This will prevent intruders from accessing your garage using the default LiftMaster code on another remote. You can reset the opener to function on more than one remote. Follow the same procedure if one of your Liftmaster remotes got stolen or missing, that way no one can open your garage door.
In order to reset a standard set of codes on your LiftMaster garage door opener, all you have to do is press and hold a learn button for about 10 seconds, until a small LED light located beside it turns off. Lear button can have a different color usually located on the back or side cover of your opener. Button color can be red, purple, green, or yellow.
Once you’ve erased the codes, none of your existing remotes will be able to open the door.
In order to pair your opener to remote again, all you have to do is press a learn button for about a second, until small LED light comes on, and then press the button on your remote control. You should hear a click and your opener’s light will blink, which indicates a successful Liftmaster remote reprogramming.

There are a couple of things you need to know before you start LiftMaster garage door opener programming. First, it is important to know where the Learn button is located on the door opener and take note of its color.
The colors are usually green, red, orange, purple, or yellow. You might need a stepladder to reach the opener. Wall-mounted panels also come with physical buttons or menus to help with the programming.
You should also have the remotes you intend to program at hand and ensure they have well-functioning batteries. To know if the remote is working well, press any button. If it has an LED light, it should light up even before it is programmed.
There are two groups of LiftMaster remote controls—the standard and the MAX LiftMaster remote controls. The former group includes these models:
The latter group includes:
The LiftMaster standard remote control can be programmed to activate a number of devices including garage door openers, commercial door openers, external wired-in receivers, and gate operators.
These are the steps to follow when doing LiftMaster garage door opener programming for standard remote controls:
Step 1: Locate the garage door opener’s Learn button. It is usually on the same side as the antenna and you might need to remove the light lens to be able to access it. The button can have a yellow, purple, red, orange, or green color. There is also a small LED light beside it.
Step 2: Push the Learn button once and release it.
Step 3: Press and hold the button that you are programming on your remote control for three seconds before releasing it. This should be done within 30 seconds of pressing the Learn button.
If the programming is successful, the LED indicator light will turn off and the garage operator lights will blink; it’s that simple. Let us know if you need any help programming your LiftMaster garage door opener or you need advice on the matter.
Here’s how to do the same for MAX remote controls:
Step 1: After finding the location of the Program button on your garage door opener, use a safety pin or a paper clip to press the button until the LED light turns on.
Note: For the 893MAX remote control, the button is usually located at the back of the device under the visor clip. On the 877MAX which has a keyless entry keypad, press * and # simultaneously until the keys have a steady light instead of flashing. This will get the controller in programming mode.
Step 2: On the remote, press the button that you are programming and release.
Step 3: After the LED light on the remote control has stopped blinking, slowly press and release the button once more. Repeat the process until the light bulb blinks.
Note: Do not press the button after the light bulb has blinked. This will put the remote in a different setting and make it impossible to operate. In case you accidentally press the button after the light bulb blinks, start the process afresh from step 1.
Step 4: Press any button on your remote control after the light bulb has blinked.
It is important to note that you can only program one button on the remote control at a time. If you need to program other buttons, repeat the steps for each of the buttons you want to program.
You should also test the remote control to see that it works the way you expect it to.
If you are having problems with any of these steps, LiftMaster has online manuals for most of its products online, which can help you out if you have the patience. Search for the model number of your remote control or garage door opener to get more information. You can also reach out to our garage door experts for help.
If you misplace one of your remotes or just want to start over on a clean state, you can always clear the memory of your garage door opener. It will erase all the remote controls in its memory. It prevents the wrong people using your old or lost remote controls to access your garage.
Push the learn button on your garage door opener and hold it until the LED light on the button goes out. This usually takes about 6 seconds. It will erase all the remote control codes from the opener’s memory. You can now start the process of programming your LiftMaster garage door opener afresh.
